Corona Virus and Plastic Pollution

How is the Corona Virus affecting the environment around you?

The plastic pollution problem is the leading visible havoc we are causing to our planet, we have a background of battling this problem even before the Corona Virus.

The Corona Virus has posed many challenges that we need to address as face a heads on fight with it. We must adhere to the guidelines put by the World Health Organization as well as adhere to those by our national governments or even local leaders. These measures including creating a social distance, compulsory wearing of face masks and use of sanitary or surgical gloves among others are key to follow up.

Many people are wearing face masks and using gloves world wide, in Uganda the masks have been a must wear for any one accessing public spaces. But the question to as is where are the masks ending up after use.
As I was cruising through different platforms I landed on this article in The Independent - UK. https://www.independent.co.uk/news/coronavirus-masks-gloves-oceans-pollution-waste-a9469471.html?
After reading it, I took more time to look into the situation as it was reported. I followed up the team that did this great at Oceans Asia (@oceansasia1) and collected more information.

As governments make the use of face masks and gloves mandatory, there is already a big contributing to waste generated. Many of these have been disposed off irresponsibily and are ending up in our environment. According to tweets made by Oceans Asia (oceansasia1) many of these were found floating / littered on Hong Hong beaches.

They are used for a single time everywhere, ask your neighbor where they disposed the first mask they used.

Here are 14 images, I combined from (oceansasia1) You can be able to view them here;
